I think you can compare the two other systems as a analogy for this topic: wi-fi vs ethernet. Wi-fi is great. And will get you what you need, when you need it, but it will have its problems. Where ethernet is going to be more reliable, faster and thus the preferred choice. They both have its strengths, but if you were to choose one for speed and reliability, then you’d want to choose ethernet. Like HDMI and SDI. SDI is going to be the preferred choice, given if it’s what’s available. HDMI isn’t necessarily bad, it’s just not as strong as SDI. USB used to be the slower signals when transferring data compared to firewire. Now it’s surpassed it and coming catching up to thunderbolt. HDMI could do the same. Just choose what works best for you in your situation.

I don’t want to flog a dead horse here, but I did a bit of searching (out of curiosity) and checked out the specs of some prominent cine cameras, Canon C300 MkIII/C500 MkII, Sony Venice/FX9, Panasonic EVA1 and they all have HDMI. So basically the statement reflecting that professional cine cameras don’t have HDMI, is perhaps a tad in error.

Think this will work with the new SONY A7s iii to record BRaw 4k from the camera via HDMI? I keep hearing about the Atomos supporting it for ProRezRaw4k, but would love to stick with Braw.

That will more than likely depend on Sony’s output over HDMI. Assuming the Atomos can record Prores RAW, BM’s VA can record to their BRAW codec.

    Thanks rich.

Is there a way to sort by latest posts ?

At the moment that feature doesn’t exist. But will keep checking.

Like all things, they’ll evolve. In 5 years we might all be viewing videos via USB-C or Thunderbolt. One of the pros HDMI has going for it is the ability to pick up a cord almost anywhere in case something goes down. For micro budget, even indies, this can come in really handy.

SDI has its place. So does HDMI. HDMI 2.1 could be a new beginning. But SDI might have a high speed coming its way sooner than later. I say use what you got when you have it.

Nice. I might have to revisit some of my cable techniques. I was in the middle of updating some mod tools. It’s perhaps why your first post wasn’t allowing pictures to come through.

I need some 360 views!! I dig your cable management. Especially on the second unit.

I really dig the cable management on the second photo. Is that your rig? What’s happening there?

Ha. Didn’t even notice that part.

I was digging this, until I saw the amount of power the motor requires. For gimbal use I don’t see this working out too well.
Not having an external battery for the controller isn’t the greatest, but you can probably use a portable 5v usb powered brick to keep it running if it dies. Definitely a great affordable option, though.

I wanna add something else to your post. I got the Titla Matte box myself and have so far been decently impressed. One of the first gripes I had was no side flags. I got around that by using Glide Gear articulating arm lens shade. Because the top of the box has holes for mounting things, these work perfectly.

I too sometimes power the Nucleus Nano with a 5v power source when my battery dies. Glad it’s a hidden feature cause it’s come in handy a few times.
